BMC Standing Committee Approves Constitution-Based Learning Material for Classes 1–10

BMC Standing Committee approves Constitution-based educational material for Classes 1–10, focusing on constitutional values, rights, duties and social justice under NEP 2020.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Standing Committee on Wednesday approved a proposal to prepare educational material based on the Indian Constitution for students from Class 1 to Class 10.

The material will be prepared in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the State Curriculum Framework. It will introduce students to constitutional values, fundamental rights, duties and the principles of social justice.

Welcoming the Standing Committee’s decision, Mumbai BJP president and MLA Amit Satam said the Constitution is the foundation of the country’s democratic system. He said it is necessary to familiarise students with constitutional values and responsible citizenship from an early age.

Satam said NEP 2020 and the State Curriculum Framework emphasise the holistic development of students, along with awareness of constitutional values, respect for social laws and responsible social and civic behaviour.

He said educational material suited to students’ age and level of understanding, using activity-based and experiential learning methods, would therefore be useful.

Satam said the initiative would help strengthen students’ understanding of and respect for the Constitution while encouraging them to become responsible, sensitive and aware citizens. The material will also focus on explaining fundamental rights and duties, along with the principles of social justice, in a simple manner.

A few months ago, BMC Education Committee member and BJP Mumbai Mahila Morcha president Yojana Thokle had proposed a separate curriculum related to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and constitutional values for students in BMC schools.

Following the Standing Committee’s approval, the process of taking the proposal forward will now begin, marking the next step in introducing Constitution-based educational material for students in BMC schools.
